Alas I can't see any aerial photography or GPS to capture the changes at Silverstone!

Capturing these names can be very helpful even when they aren't signed on the ground - Pinders Pond and The Hook are two I found out about a few months after moving here - I'd read loads of stuff in the local news letters and magazines mentioning both of those and even getting a survey asking about the latter one - I dare say many other newcomers would have had no idea what that was on about! (The latter is has since become The Hook Local Nature Reserve and is now signed)Kevjs1982https://www.blogger.com/profile/04760584153907095065noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2082422783692631078.post-46507737930793562822011-06-11T11:56:11.473+01:002011-06-11T11:56:11.473+01:00I wonder how many people still read this page http...I wonder how many people still read this page http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Name

Even if a name is not displayed (because it uses a tag like loc_name rather than name, or because it's a feature that is not rendered) it will often be found when searched for. As such it can be very helpful for these to be in OpenStreetMap, so people can type in the names they are used to.

What is the official name anyway? Why can't OpenStreetMap become a source for finding out what a place is known as. I'm sure histoorians would be interested.

The only one I'm unsure about is climbing route names. When they can be so short, it seems they are similar to providing a building floorplan. they also have different technical issues/requirements for data storage and visualisation due to the (near)vertical plane. It might be better to map/name the cliff face and link/refer to somewhere that describes the climbs and holds on it.Gregory Marlerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16334702270634854614noreply@blogger.com
